What is Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca also knows as Yagé, is a powerful traditional medicine used for centuries by indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin for spiritual and healing purposes. The name «Ayahuasca» comes from the Quechua language, where aya means «soul» or «spirit,» and huasca means «vine» or «rope,» often translated as «vine of the soul» or «spirit vine.»The brew is made from two main ingredients: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine ( Ayahuasca roots ) and the leaves of the Psychotria viridis plant, or other DMT-containing plants ( chakruna leaves ).
This Brew creates a powerful spiritual, and healing experience that is often described as a journey of self-discovery, deep introspection, and spiritual awakening. Commonly our participants experience : fractals, emotional revelations, and a heightened sense of connection to nature, the universe, or their own consciousness. It is important to understand that Ayahuasca works on three levels: the physical body, the mind, and the spirit. Each participant’s experience will vary in different areas, as the medicine acts differently depending on the internal needs of each individual.
It is very important that ayahuasca ceremonies are guided by shamans or traditional healers (Taitas), who supervise the experience and use rituals, chants and protective measures to ensure a safe retreat and meaningful encounter. These ceremonies are not only spiritual but are also used to treat mental, emotional and even physical ailments, with the aim of cleansing and healing the body and spirit.
The Ayahuasca Tradition throughout History
The Yagé or Ayahuasca plant is considered the cup of life in many ancient South American cultures. It is believed to provide a direct connection to the spiritual world and divine consciousness. While spirituality can be achieved through practices like prayer or transcendental meditation, Ayahuasca is seen as a more direct path to this state. Participating in an Ayahuasca Healing Retreat allows individuals to experience this profound connection in a guided and supportive environment. Used for hundreds of years by Amazonian tribes, Ayahuasca is still practiced today by indigenous peoples in the Amazon and Putumayo, Colombia, as a way to connect deeply with spirituality and consciousness. An Ayahuasca Healing Retreat provides the opportunity to undergo a transformative journey, guided by experienced shamans, and supported by the sacred traditions of these ancient cultures.
DMT (N, N-dimethyltryptamine) is the active ingredient in Yagé and is often referred to as the ‘molecule of God.’ It is a tryptamine alkaloid present in various plants and living beings. Its oral use in humans is made possible by the synergy between an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) and tryptamine-containing plants such as Mimosa hostilis or Psychotria viridis. The Ayahuasca brew includes Psychotria viridis. DMT is rapidly metabolized by monoamine oxidase, but the use of plants like Banisteriopsis caapi or Peganum harmala, which contain beta-carbolines, enables its ingestion and effects.
Participating in a safe ayahuasca retreat ensures that the entire process—from the preparation of the medicine to the guidance during the ceremony—is carried out under professional and secure conditions. DMT, naturally present in the human body, primarily affects the pineal gland and is thought to circulate during states such as sleep, deep meditation, prayer, birth, and death. Experiencing Ayahuasca in a safe ayahuasca retreat helps participants tap into these altered states of consciousness in a controlled and supportive environment, facilitating profound spiritual and healing experiences.
